Youth Ventures into Sugarcane Wastes Recycling in Kenya
The Kenya National Discourse Forum (KNDF) affiliated youth group's company, Eco2librium, based in Kakamega is using sugarcane leftovers to produce charcoal for domestic use as an initiative to save Kakamega Forest from destruction.
Recycling sugarcane waste started two years ago where the company managed to produce over 800 bags of charcoal briquettes per month.
The Company’s Director Christopher Amutabi, says that charcoal made from sugarcane produces less ash and dust and burns three to four times longer than the conventional wood charcoal.
Efforts to make Lake Victoria and dams free of hyacinth and other weeds: experience from Tanzania
Water hyacinth and other aquatic weeds have invaded Lake Victoria and dams. The invasion has caused very serious economic problems to the communities living around the lake as their economic activities depend on the Lake/dams.
On the Tanzanian side of Lake Victoria, the Socio-Economic Development Trust Fund (SEDTF) embarked on the project of water hyacinth removal and control at the landing beaches of Mwigobero and Nyarusurya of Musoma Municipal and various dams within Mara and nearby regions since 2014.
NBD at the 12th Regional Nile Day Celebrations; Addis Ababa - Federal Republic of Ethiopia
On the 22nd of February 2018, Nile Basin Discourse (NBD) joined Nile Basin Initiative (NBI) and the 10 Nile riparian states to celebrate the 12th Regional Nile Day in Addis Ababa - Federal Republic of Ethiopia. The theme for this year's celebration was: "The Nile: Shared River, Collective Action".
NBD was represented by members of the NBD Executive Board, NBD board member for Ethiopia, member Civil society organizations of the Ethiopian National Discourse Forum, and the NBD Secretariat Staff.
In a statement delivered by the NBD Secretary General Mr Donald KASONGI on behalf of the NBD Board Chair Prof. Muawia SHADDAD among other issues reiterated that the NBD Network is ready and will continue to work closely with NBI Centres and Governments of the Nile Basin to foster cooperation and support initiatives that lead to enhanced optimal and collective sharing of the resources of the Nile.
