Project Achievements Brief: Engaging Civil Society for Social and Climate Resilience in the Nile Basin Project (P132448) - NBD/CIWA-WB (2014 - 2019)

IN NUMBERS
=> US$2,500,000 disbursed to NBD from 2014-2019
=> 1, 568 direct beneficiaries reached in ten countries
=> 533 youth and Women attended capacity development on Resilience to Climate change in ten countries

On November 30th, 2013, NBD a grant from CIWA/World Bank to implement the project ‘Engaging Civil Society for Social and Climate Resilience in the Nile Basin (P132448). The initial phase ran from February 2014 to 31st December 2016.
Due to the successful implementation of the project, NBD received additional financing of US$ 1,000,000 for the second phase of the project which ran from January 2017 to December 2019.
Additional Financing was given to concretize the achievements out of the CIWA/WB first phase Project P132448 such as the implementation of Communication, M&E, and Financial Sustainability strategies; and support the implementation of the issues that emerged therein.

In 2019, the planned activities were guided by the new strategy and the Project Appraisal Document (PAD) on Additional Financing (AF). Thus, the work plan was to implement a section of the strategic engagements stipulated in the NBD Strategy 2018 - 2022 titled "Aquawareness and Empowerment' that are in line with the activities prioritized in the Project Appraisal Document of the AF for the year 2017 - 2019.

From January to December 2019, NBD focused on activities of the three major components specified under CIW A/WB Grant TFO 15834, (AF); Strengthening the NBD Secretariat, Improved Communication & Outreach, and Capacity building for NBD members. The title of the Project was maintained as, ''Engaging Civil Society for Social and Climate Resilience in the Nile Basin''.

FACT SHEET: Advocating For Water - Food - Energy and Climate Nexus For Efficient And Effective Use Of Available Water Resources For The Socio - Economic Development of The Nile Basin Communities

Population pressure, intensifying living standards and the rapidly increased industrial world are increasing the demand on water, food and energy, necessitating a holistic action called the nexus. The inter-linkage of this nexus has emerged as a popular concept and is now a key feature of policy making. This is be-cause it takes huge sums of water to create food and energy and also takes huge energy to move food from place to place, generate heat, treat water, and produce food. Food crops are sometimes used as a source of energy.
The complex triangular -pillar relationship, referred to as the water-food-energy nexus, is an intricate puzzle, in which the increased demand for each limited resource can significantly affect the security of all three. The water, energy and food (WEF) nexus means that the three sectors (water security, energy security and food security) are inextricably linked and those actions in one area more often than not have impacts in one or both of the others.
